What is this: “removal of calculus”?

perio, gums, teeth

What is perio?

“Perio”. It’s a term that we in our industry use way too much… “Perio” refers to “periodontal disease”. Periodontal disease is quite a debilitating condition that affects the predominant human population. Yes…it’s that common! Periodontal disease i.e. perio is the progressive loss of bone in the jaw bone around the teeth. If you get enough perio, you’ll lose your teeth from literally falling out.

Periodontal disease is one of the most common chronic diseases that affect “man” – the species. That means that periodontal disease has been around since our early ancestors i.e. Homo Erectus all the way to us homosapiens. It’s not going away anytime soon…so that’s the bad news.

The good news is that “perio” or periodontal disease is entirely preventable in most cases. Regular scaling and cleaning procedures at your favourite dental clinic (Enso Dental North Perth) and meticulous at-home oral hygiene measures will ensure that you get to keep your teeth as long as you’re still kicking around on the dance floor in your wheelchair.

Everyone talks to me about dentistry being expensive. It doesn’t have to be. With regular prevention and maintenance as mentioned above, you can keep your teeth in your jaw without any fillings for a very long time. I’ve seen it a number of patients in the last few years, especially in the 18-30 year old population.

So, get in to see your dentist and ask for that “scale and clean” that you’ve been neglecting to do for some time now….oh and yes, shhh, we won’t tell anyone!

Call us at Enso Dental North Perth on 6382 3399 and tell us about the content of this blog for a complimentary smile consultation including 3D digital scans of your teeth!
