What is this: “removal of calculus”?

You look at your receipt from your last dental visit. “Removal of calculus – 114”. What the hell does that mean and why did it cost so much, she was only in there for 20 minutes!”?

Removal of calculus – 114 is one of the most commonly health fund codes used in the dental industry. It refers to a standard “scale and clean” as it’s more commonly known by patients. It involves the careful and gentle (most of the time) removal of plaque and calculus from your teeth by a qualified dental professional.

Removal of plaque and calculus varies from patient to patient depending on the amount of plaque and calculus in your mouth. At our clinic in Enso Dental North Perth, we charge you for your “removal of calculus – 114” more around time spent cleaning your teeth rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Furthermore, we take it one step further by incentivising you to return more regularly for your dental visits and scale and clean procedures by reducing your out of pocket expenses as you become more and more of a regular, consistent attender.

We do this to ensure that you understand the importance of regular dental visits rather than a reactionary approach to dental problems. Sure, we understand that everyone has concerns about cost so that’s why we do our best to keep you informed of potential problems and issues well before they turn into big (and usually somewhat expensive) problems.

If you’re guilty of having skipped your past few dental visits, call us at Enso Dental in North Perth and we’ll see you without any preachy or “judgey” attitude as soon as we possibly can. We’d love to see you soon to get you on a preventative regime that is customised to your lifestyle and oral health needs.

    Hi,
Would you say 114 is an item you would bill for young children (age 5) as part of a routine check-up?
    Regards

      Hi Vol,

Code 011 is a comprehensive examination (aka routine check-up). This definition is as per the The Australian Schedule of Dental Services and Glossary, which is the authority on these terms.
Code 114 is a removal of calculus (aka a clean). Sometimes calculus is called tartar or scale.
      I hope this helps!

      Regards, Dr Ryan Moldrich
